Unique Geography

Adana is located on the northeastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, serving as a gateway to Cukurova, better known to Westerners as Cilicia. Adana, which lies along the southeast of the Taurus Mountains, has a coast of 160 kilometres to the Mediterranean Sea and Mediterranean climate characteristics are observed in the region. 73% of the Cukurova Region is located within the borders of Adana province. In this region, which is enriched and irrigated by the alluvium carried by the Seyhan, Ceyhan and Berdan rivers, a wide variety of crops can be grown with yields above the average of Türkiye and many developed countries due to the favourable ecological conditions.

The centre of Adana is located in the centre of Cukurova, a geographical, economic and cultural region covering the provinces of Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye and Hatay. Most of the region, which is home to approximately 6.33 million people, is a large and flat land, which is very suitable for agriculture.

Adana is surrounded by Kayseri to the north, Osmaniye to the east, Kahramanmaraş to the northeast, Hatay to the southeast, Niğde to the northwest, Mersin to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Adana has 15 districts and municipalities, 5 of which are central districts (Seyhan, Yüreğir, Çukurova, Sarıçam, Karaisalı), and the height of the city centre is 23 metres above sea level.

Adana is surrounded by a part of the Central Taurus Mountains and the Amanos Mountains. The Taurus Mountains extend from west to east until Uzunyayla. These mountains have heights exceeding 3000 metres, as well as hard slopes and deep valleys. In this part of the Taurus Mountains, Gülek Strait, the most important pass connecting Central Anatolia to the south, is located.

The hydroelectric power plant and the Seyhan reservoir, which was completed in 1956, surround the north of the city. The dam was built for hydroelectric power and is intended to irrigate the low Çukurova plain. The city’s two irrigation canals flowing into the plain pass through the city centre from east to west. There is also another canal for irrigation of the Yüreğir Plain.

The area between Taurus and Amanos Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea is called Cukurova. Misis Mountains divide Cukurova into two with their not very high appearance. The southern part is called ‘Lower Plain’ and the northern part is called ‘Upper Plain’. Although there are many large and small rivers within the borders of the province, Seyhan and Ceyhan rivers are the most important rivers of Adana.

It is the sixth largest metropolitan area in Turkey and a leading agricultural, commercial and cultural centre. Being the 4th mineral-rich region in Türkiye, Adana is important in terms of chromium, iron, manganese, lead and zinc deposits.
