Along with agriculture, animal husbandry also contributes to Adana’s economy above the average of the country’s economy due to the geographical conditions. In addition to bovine and ovine husbandry, seafood production has an important place in Yumurtalık and Karataş, the districts of Adana, which are located on the Mediterranean Sea.

According to 2018 data, Adana ranks 6th in Turkey with its agricultural production capacity, which is the result of the combined evaluation of crop production, animal production and livestock value data. Of the total 1,080,000 animals in 29,500 livestock enterprises, 265,500 are cattle and 814,500 are sheep and goats. In addition, there are 7,250,000 poultry raised for carnivorous and egg production, while the number of beehives used in honey production is 670 thousand.

The number of livestock in Adana province varies according to the geographical situation, climatic conditions and agricultural character of the province. Since all areas in the plain parts are devoted to cultivation, mostly barn animal husbandry is carried out. Livestock breeding and poultry farming are practised close to the city centre, while sheep and goats are kept in mountainous and forested areas.

Adana province also has an important place in aquaculture production. Black caviar is produced with sturgeon, which is the first and only fish produced in Adana in Türkiye. At the same time, it has a very important place in the production of mullet caviar (yellow caviar) obtained from the dives on the Mediterranean coast. In 2018, 6,200 tonnes of the total 8,000 tonnes of aquaculture production was obtained from the seas with 280 fishing vessels and 1800 tonnes was obtained from aquaculture production.

When we say aquaculture products in Adana, products such as shrimp, blue crab, squid, sand mussel, Lagos fish, mullet, sea bass, sea bream, sea snail, mullet caviar, sturgeon caviar, trout, silvery carp, Adana pearl fish, mustached fish come to the fore. In Adana, frog legs, live frogs, snails are also collected and produced.
