History and Cultural Heritage

According to many sources, the name Adana derives from the name of the city Uru Adania of the Kizzuvatna Kingdom under the Hittite Empire. According to an ancient Greco-Roman legend, the name Adana originates from Adanus and Sarus, two sons of Uranus, who came near the Seyhan River (Sarus) and founded Adana. Archaeological excavations have unearthed human settlements dating back to the Paleolithic Age. Tepebağ Mound, which was determined to have been built in the Neolithic Age, was unearthed during the excavations. Tepebag Mound is known to be the oldest city in the Cukurova region.

It is understood from the tablets found in the excavations that bread and water were the main foodstuffs of the Hittites, one of the oldest civilisations that lived in this region. Around 180 types of bread, pastry, buns and bakery products are found in Hittite tablets. Cukurova, a centre of grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits, is the place where the first bakery products were made in the world and the homeland of modern pastry. In the light of this information, it is possible to talk about the existence of a creative class that has enabled the formation of gastronomy culture since the first years of settlement in Adana and to say that the city has an important place in the development of culinary arts.

Adana, which has been under the influence of many nomadic and settled civilisations since the Hittites, has received important migrations from different cultures such as the Balkans, Crete, Central Asia and Syria in the history of the Republic. Its deep-rooted history and multicultural structure have led to the development of Adana’s rich cuisine today.

Besides its multicultural history, fertile lands, rich gastronomy potential, Adana is also known as a city of castles and bridges. Anavarza Castle, one of the most important castles, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and is home to a total of 8 historical castles. Anazarbos Castle, built in late antiquity, was built on a hill near the ancient city of Anazarbos and passed to the Romans in 17 BC; then it saw various restorations during the Byzantine, Armenian, Arab and Turkish periods respectively. Adana is home to the Stone Bridge, the oldest actively used bridge in the world. The Stone Bridge, one of the landmarks of the city, was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrianus between 117-138 AD and is used extensively by the residents of the city.

The history and culture of Adana is reflected in the richness of its museums. The most important of these museums is the New Adana Museum. The statue depicting the Hittite god named ‘Tarhunda’ on a chariot drawn by oxen in the New Adana Museum, which is the largest museum complex in Türkiye, is one of the masterpieces of the museum as a value that has come to the present day from thousands of years. Another important museum, Adana Cinema Museum, where the productions of important cinema artists from Adana are exhibited, has special corners belonging to important Adana artists such as Yılmaz Güney, Şahin Kaygun, Yaşar Kemal, Abidin Dino, Muzaffer İzgü, Orhan Kemal and Ali Özgentürk, and there is a library of 3000 books containing photographs and cinema books. Yılmaz Güney, who also depicted this geography in his films, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982. Today, activities such as Yaşar Kemal Art Days and Adana Film Festival are organised to raise new writers and filmmakers. In this context, the city, which has an important potential in cinema, which is one of the creative industries, has a lot of work that has been active from the past to the present. Adana expands its inventory in the field of cinema by hosting many activities such as festivals, organisations, film and series shootings every year.
