Better Food at School Programme
Early childhood is crucial for cognitive and emotional development. Introducing basic agricultural education at this stage helps children connect with nature, fostering environmental awareness and sustainable behaviors. This programme aims to improve children’s access to healthy food, raise awareness about local foods and emphasize the link between agriculture and gastronomy, addressing unhealthy food choices and limited knowledge of local food cultures.
Key partners include Adana Metropolitan Municipality, the Adana Provincial Directorate of Education, Adana Farmers Union, Çukurova Development Agency and Slow Food Adana Community. The target group is children aged 6-18.
The programme will replace junk food in canteens with locally grown fruits in 5 pilot schools, create small agricultural fields for students to grow their own food in schools, establish a greenhouse for learning agricultural techniques and distribute a children’s book on Adana’s culinary culture to 50,000 students.
The programme will provide 3,500 students with access to healthy food, enable 3,500 students to grow their own agricultural products, raise awareness about agricultural production in30,000 students and introduce 50,000 students to Adana’s culinary culture.
